Dr. Jeffrey Kassing
Jeffrey Kassing is a Professor of Communication Studies in the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences at Arizona State University. He earned his Ph.D. from Kent State University with an emphasis in organizational communication in 1997.
Dr. Kassing's primary line of research concerns how employees express dissent about organizational policies and practices. As part of his dissertation research he developed the Organizational Dissent Scale (Kassing, 1998), which measures the degree to which employees express dissent to management, to coworkers, and to family and friends outside of work. He has continued to research in this area and his work now includes numerous publications on the topic of dissent.
Dr. Kassing is the author of Dissent in Organizations (Polity, 2011). Choice, a publication of The Association of College and Research Libraries/American Library Association, placed the book on their Outstanding Academic Titles list for 2011, noting that “This scholarly acknowledgement of the vital role of dissent is refreshing and long overdue”.
Dr. Kassing also co-authored the book Managing Risk in Communication Encounters: Strategies for the Workplace (Sage, 2011) with departmental colleague Vince Waldron. The text examines risky communication situations in the workplace by considering how people deal with issues related to expressing dissent, emotion, and negative feedback as well as how they deal with difficult teammates, organizational romance, and workplace bullying. The book won the National Communication Association (Organizational Communication Division) Book of the Year Award in 2010.
